The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. Everyone told me to read it, now i doubt any book recommendation. I read depressing books for pleasure, see previous posts; I am okay with a good cry, insane characters, murder, horribly inhumane things. However, never before have i been this disgusted with a book, not only by the novel itself, but by the writing too.
Day 5: Book That Makes You Happy
While trying to come up with this, I realized I read a lot of depressing, sad books. But a book that always cheers me up is Pride and Prejudice. It’s romantic, funny, happy-ending, no deaths or dying family members, no ill-fated lovers, or abusive parents—though one is pretty mental—. This book never fails to put me in a great mood.
Day 6: Book That Makes You Sad
Now Face to Face by Karleen Koen. It feels like the end of a beloved series, I have to know that everything will be alright with Slane and Barbara. Also, way too many people die, similar with Through a Glass Darkly, especially characters you don’t expect, only adding to the poignancy of Koen’s storytelling. Very dramatic, one of my top reads, just limited to once or twice a year.
Day 7: Most Underrated Book
Any book by Tracy Chevalier. I know The Girl with a Pearl Earring was quite notable and even made into a film-with Colin Firth no less! However, her other novels are just as good, if not way better in my own humble opinion. Her style is quite masterful. Favorite author of all time.
Because everyone says hp: i have to note that honestly, i never read the whole harry potter series, I am only on the third one as of four years ago, but I do love the movies. I do!
And continue:
But my favorite series has to be the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. They have a little bit of everything, romance, love story, wars, battles, time travel, nerdy guy, sexy scottish laird guy, sorcery, France, Scotland, wwii, lochs, and i’m rambling…
Extra note: favorite series as a child was Nancy Drew. Those mysteries were my one true love over summer break during elementary school. I wanted to be Nancy when I grew up. Too this day I still fondly recall Nancy’s adventures with her friends George and Bess, her bf Ned, who was of course the total jock, frat boy, but in the classy 1950’s way. I still remember one of my favorite stories was The Mystery of the 99 Steps because she was in France, got to stay at a chateau, and solve a mystery!
